I am close to get a dedicated server in some data center and in the shopping cart there is no option to RAID1 Hardware only RAID1 by Software, since they will install ESXi it's possible that ESXi can run a software to emulate a hardware RAID1? how it will affect the performance?

- ESXi does not recognize software RAIDs. You will need a real RAID controller. It can recognize HP-like software RAID, (the b120i for example) but only if you use the HP specific ESXi build, or inject the drivers some how.
- In working recently with a new 14G PowerEdge R740 server loaded with ESXi 6.5 running a DAS setup, I was able to pull down the PERCCLI utility for ESXi 6.5 and install on the host to manage RAID. In this post we will walk through how to install and manage Dell RAID in VMware ESXi 6.5 with PERCCLI utility.

No. This is not possible. VMware ESXi can live on a non-RAID disk or a hardware RAID solution, but has no provision for software RAID.

I would contact the provider and express your intentions to see what they have that could meet VMware's hardware requirements.

So I just bought 2x2TB drives to set up a RAID1 so that I have some fault-tolerance in my system and while the setup of the raid array within the motherboard utility (mobo is a Gigabyte MX31-BS0 server board) was a snap, I cant get my existing ESXi install to recognize it as a single drive..it just see's both of the drives indivually. Does ESXi really not support what appears to be software based raid? I would need an additional PCIe controller then? Note that it appears my RAID controller (or at least the RAID setup utility) is 'Intel' v4.3.x.

If thats the case, is there another way I can easily perform a backup of data? So right now I have several VM's taking up about 1TB of data on a drive. These additional drives (2TB's each) could serve as a manual backup storage instead of RAID but how would I go about doing that?
Just looking for some experts thoughts. Still new to both RAID setups and ESXi :)
